London Christmas Markets 2026: Dates, Best Markets and Where to Stay
London’s Christmas markets are not all the same kind of event, and that matters when you plan a trip. If you are searching for London Christmas markets 2026, the short version is this: Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is the biggest and the only one where everyone needs a ticket. The Southbank and London Bridge markets are the best riverside pair. Covent Garden, Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square make the easiest central walking route.
Some of these are proper markets with wooden chalets and seasonal food. Others are festive districts with lights, shops and events. Winter Wonderland is closer to a fairground with a Christmas market inside it. Several 2026 programmes have not been published yet, so I have separated confirmed dates from TBC dates rather than recycling last year’s. Last checked: 30 September 2026. If you are staying overnight, see where to stay below.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland runs from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 and is closed on Christmas Day. It is much bigger than any other market on this list. The organisers advertise around 150 rides, attractions and shows, alongside the Christmas market stalls, Bavarian Village, bars, live entertainment and ice skating.
Every visitor needs an entry ticket. Rides and attractions are paid for separately. Families will get the most from it, but it also works for adults who are more interested in the food, the bars and the live entertainment than traditional craft stalls.
“Treat it as the main event of your day, not a quick stop. If you are visiting with children, choose a hotel around Hyde Park rather than one built around Leicester Square.”
— JPLocation & Dates

The market runs along the Thames beside the Southbank Centre, with alpine-style chalets, street food and seasonal drinks. The London Eye, Royal Festival Hall and National Theatre are all within a few minutes’ walk.
The 2026 dates have not been published yet. In 2025 it ran from 3 November to 4 January, so I would expect a similar window, but I would not treat that as confirmed.
“The value here is what surrounds it. Walk east along the river towards London Bridge afterwards.”

The stalls and seasonal food sit beside the Thames, near Hay’s Galleria, with Tower Bridge and the City of London as the backdrop. The 2026 dates are TBC (the 2025 market ran from 13 November to 4 January).
During the day it is a Christmas market. Once it gets dark, the riverside setting becomes much more important.
“Arrive late afternoon and stay into the evening. The setting is at its best after dark.”

The market sits in the West End, surrounded by theatres, restaurants, Chinatown and Piccadilly Circus. It is much smaller than Winter Wonderland, but its location makes it one of the easiest to include in a central London itinerary.
The 2026 dates are TBC, so check the organiser before you travel.
“Combine it with Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square rather than making a separate trip.”

Covent Garden is a Christmas destination rather than a traditional market. The 2026 lights switch-on is on 12 November 2026, with the tree in the West Piazza and the decorations in the Market Building.
It is not a Christmas market in the German-market sense. If you want dozens of independent stalls, pair it with Southbank and Leicester Square.
“It is also the easiest area to use as a base. You can walk to Leicester Square, Trafalgar Square and much of the West End.”
— JPLocation & Dates

The Norwegian Christmas tree is the centrepiece, with the National Gallery behind it and Charing Cross close by. The 2026 dates are TBC. In recent years the tree and festivities have started in early December, so I would not plan around a November visit.

Greenwich Market has independent stalls for crafts, gifts, fashion, artwork and food, and the Cutty Sark, Greenwich Park, the Royal Observatory and the National Maritime Museum are all nearby. The 2026 dates are TBC, although it has traditionally opened in mid-November.
“Treat it as a separate day out, not an extra stop on the central route.”

King’s Cross runs several smaller markets rather than one big event, and the 2026 dates have not all been announced. Check the King’s Cross and Coal Drops Yard pages for current listings.
It is easy to reach by Tube and mainline rail, which makes it a practical stop if you arrive in London by train.
“A good option if you prefer smaller, more contemporary markets to one large Christmas event.”

Where to Stay for London’s Christmas Markets
Choose your hotel area before you choose your markets. Staying near Covent Garden or the Strand puts the central markets on foot, and staying near Hyde Park puts Winter Wonderland on your doorstep.
For the central route, I would look at The Savoy, Rosewood London or Raffles London at The OWO, which is a short walk from Trafalgar Square. For Winter Wonderland, The Dorchester and Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park are both beside the park.
If you want the full shortlist for a Christmas stay, see my guide to the best 5-star hotels in London for Christmas 2026.
Can You Visit Several London Christmas Markets in One Day?
Yes. The central London markets suit one walking day. Check which of them are open on your date before you commit to the timings.
-
01
10:00 — Covent Garden
Start early, before the busiest part of the day. See the Christmas decorations, the tree and the Market Building.
-
02
11:30 — Leicester Square
Walk across to Leicester Square. Allow around an hour for the market.
-
03
12:30 — Trafalgar Square
Continue to Trafalgar Square and see the tree and the square.
-
04
13:30 — Southbank
Walk to the Thames and cross to the South Bank. Have lunch at the Winter Market and spend some time along the river.
-
05
15:30 — Towards London Bridge
Follow the Thames towards London Bridge and Hay’s Galleria.
-
06
16:00 — Winter by the River
Finish at London Bridge as it gets dark. This is the point to stop rushing and spend some time around the river and Tower Bridge.
You do not need to see all eight markets. For a first visit I would do Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Trafalgar Square, Southbank and London Bridge. Treat Winter Wonderland as its own half-day or full day, and Greenwich and King’s Cross as alternatives rather than extra stops.
London Christmas Markets 2026 FAQs
The most common questions about London’s Christmas markets, answered with what is confirmed for 2026 and what is not.
What are the best Christmas markets in London in 2026?
Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is the biggest. Southbank Centre Winter Market and Winter by the River are the best riverside pair. Covent Garden, Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square are the easiest to combine on foot.
What is the biggest Christmas market in London?
Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, with around 150 rides, attractions and shows plus the Christmas market, bars, food and ice skating.
Are London Christmas markets free in 2026?
Most are free to enter. Winter Wonderland is the exception: everyone needs an entry ticket, from £1 off-peak, and rides and attractions cost extra.
When do London Christmas markets start in 2026?
Most open in early to mid-November. Winter Wonderland opens on 19 November 2026 and the Covent Garden lights go on 12 November 2026. Most other dates were still to be announced at the end of September.
Which London Christmas market is best for children?
Winter Wonderland has the most for children, with rides, ice skating and Santa Land. Southbank is a practical second choice because of the nearby family attractions.
Which London Christmas market is best for couples?
Southbank and London Bridge together. Walk the Thames, stop for food and finish around Tower Bridge after dark.
Can you visit London Christmas markets after Christmas?
Yes. Winter Wonderland runs to 3 January 2027 and reopens after closing on Christmas Day. Several other markets have historically run into early January, but check the 2026/27 dates first.
Where should I stay for London Christmas markets?
Covent Garden or the West End for the central markets, the South Bank or London Bridge for the Thames markets, and Hyde Park or Knightsbridge for Winter Wonderland.
JP’s Take
Don’t try to see every market. Do the central route, and give Winter Wonderland its own time.
If you are coming to London for the Christmas markets, don’t turn the trip into a checklist. The central route of Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Trafalgar Square, Southbank and London Bridge makes one very good day. Winter Wonderland is a different kind of day and deserves its own time.
Choose the hotel area before you choose the markets. Staying around Covent Garden or the South Bank turns the markets into part of the city instead of a series of Tube journeys.
Most of the smaller organisers had not published final 2026 dates by the end of September, and I would rather say so than recycle 2025 information as confirmed. Check the official pages again before you book your December weekend.
